Matthew Sommers is a dance artist currently residing in Austin, Texas. Matthew graduated from the University of South Florida, where he graduated with distinction with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in dance and a concentration in Modern. While at USF Matthew received multiple talent scholarships including the WWD Scholarship and the Victoria Catherine Seldon Scholarship. Matthew recieved the opportunity to work with a variety of choreographers during his time at USF including Charles O. Anderson, Alex Jones, Joshua L. Peugh, and Marc Brew.

After graduation, Matthew moved to Austin where he currently lives, dances, teaches and floats around joyfully. He’s performed in Austin with Early Era Collective, Kathy Dunn Hamrick Dance Company, Spaces of Fontana, and Point A, as well as premiering his own work which combine a sense of humorous storytelling while exploring the dynamics of physicality, suspension, and weight.

Matthew’s choreography has been shown throughout both Florida and Texas with Sarasota Contemporary Dance, Central Florida Choreographers Collaboration, Moving Current’s Newgrounds, Austin Dance Festival, and Preheat Fest Austin.

Outside of dance, Matthew enjoys biking as much as possible and drinking coffee with his partner Joe and their dog Jasper.
